<br />
I've written a few posts in the past that talk about <a href="http://laurenorganizedforlife.blogspot.com/2012/12/new-years-resolutions-making-your-goals.html">New Years resolutions</a> and how to stick to them, to really see them through. I've also posted topics on how to stay motivated and <a href="http://organizedforlife.net/when-the-time-is-on-you-start-the-pressure-will-be-off/">ways to curb procrastination</a>. As a professional organizer I pride myself on really emphasizing to my clients the positive feeling they have once we are completed with a project. The weight that is lifted and the idea that clearing the space will clear your mind. It is an absolute motivational boost. It happens everytime. The motivation to keep that organization going throughout the year, and getting over the procrastinating, can at times be the only real piece that is standing in the way of you living your most organized self. The secret to becoming better organized is you. It is that simple.<br />
<br />
So let's pull back the layers of it all and dive into breaking the habits that can lead us down the road to feeling let down by our surroundings, overwhelmed in our space and possibly even ready to throw in the towel and declare yourself unorganized for life. I've listed 5 habit breakers that will get you organized in the New Year as long as you are committed and ready for a positive change. You will find yourself with more time, more energy, more money and most important peace of mind.<br />
<br />
1.<b> Stop purchasing what you don't need.</b> Plain and simple. The majority of us do not take inventory before we purchase anything from electronics to clothing. Impulse purchases are clogging up our closets, drawers and our lives. Before you shop take a moment to ask yourself if what you are looking to buy is needed and before you head to the register ask yourself the same question. By making a conscious effort to not bring into our homes items that we don't need we are instantly keeping down the clutter. Which in turn keeps things better organized and will save you money.<br />
<br />
2. <b>Adopt the one in one out rule.</b> For everything from toys to books to clothing and magazines. One shows up after a trip to the store, one must go out. You can even create a donate bin for the one out items. You are adding and then subtracting so similar to rule #1 the clutter will be minimal with less inside your home. See the pattern? Less clutter equals more space, less to clean and more time.<br />
<br />
3. <b>Open mail immediately and create a plan for the paper clutter</b>. The moment you walk in the door get into the practice of opening your mail and making decisions on what stays and what goes. Having a system for yourself in terms of how to organize incoming paper is one of the most effective ways to tackle the paper clutter. Toss the junk mail, place the bills in an envelope or bin and put away any important documents the moment you receive them. 23% of adults say they pay bills late because they can't find them. By simply setting up a mail system in your home you will be better organized and on top of important documents! Any coupons, invitations or greeting cards should also have a home, your kitchen counter doesn't count. If you notice too much junk mail coming in take a few moments to remove yourself from the lists here <a href="https://www.dmachoice.org/">https://www.dmachoice.org/</a>. More tips <a href="http://laurenorganizedforlife.blogspot.com/2012/06/basic-tools-for-family-organization.html">here</a> on steps to family organization.<br />
<br />
4. <b>Declare a home for everything. </b>Everything we purchase, receive as gifts and showcase in our homes we should love and have a use for. No exceptions. So why aren't we treating the things we love like we love them? They are on the floor, hidden under clutter in our closets. Or sometimes overlooked by too much clutter on shelving. The best way to declare a home for everything is to take it step by step. Little by little as you are cleaning your house or just tidying up as you see items out of place give them a home! Using labeled bins is a great way to keep items together and to ensure they end up back in their home. Creating a place for everything is another top time saver on the list!<br />
<br />
5. <b>Slow down. </b>Why do we insist on over extending ourselves only to end up exhausted and feeling defeated? That constant feeling that you have somewhere to be, something to do will leave you feeling cloudy without enough energy to take sometime for yourself, you will only want to crash. Make a real commitment to deciding that you will leave time in the week for yourself, to spend with family and most importantly time to recharge. Feeling refreshed will give you the energy to put towards unfinished projects in your home, exercise and the energy to organize!<br />

I always zone in on what isn't working for me organization wise and what seems out of place. This year one look inside the drawers of my dining room cabinet and knew I had to start a quick project! Our dining rooms typically have the least storage so utilizing this space well is important. The best items to store are all of your entertaining pieces from dinnerware to linens. I have one storage unit in my dining room where I keep my entertaining essentials as well as candles. Here's a little before and after recap of how I revamped my dining room cabinet in under 20 minutes!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIc00XAMN_jX82lfoUAgOet83gvoeFi0nDryZeuj09RCVPwBWagQJxNx2z6Uqu2QNJ-5ZjO_YmGP5prYK_8cGgpYs0iZNsrPyaFzNQ5AjwqTG8KyBGGErzODzU-lgUsHDNp-jWiIyRoN5Y/s1600/photo_20131202_144605.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIc00XAMN_jX82lfoUAgOet83gvoeFi0nDryZeuj09RCVPwBWagQJxNx2z6Uqu2QNJ-5ZjO_YmGP5prYK_8cGgpYs0iZNsrPyaFzNQ5AjwqTG8KyBGGErzODzU-lgUsHDNp-jWiIyRoN5Y/s320/photo_20131202_144605.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Before this draw served no purpose other than a cluttered mess. I removed the dining room table spring decor and stored them with my spring decorations in the basement. I use alot of candles when entertaining so this draw now houses all of my candles and the refills!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This drawer is specifically for all things wine. I have wine openers and my wine charms in a zip loc bag so they don't get damaged or lost. I also keep the small wine opening components in the original box so they also stay in tact. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The largest draw of my cabinet holds linens for the table, napkins for each season and all of my entertaining silverware. Things began to get buried in the bottom of the drawer so after a quick re-organization I categorized the napkins by type, refolded the linens and was sure everything was easily accessible.<br /><br /><br /></td></tr>

With the holidays here it's the perfect time to tackle that dining room. Find a home for any items that are on the table or floor. Being one of the most formal rooms in the home embrace it as a place to entertain, laugh and enjoy yourself with friends and family!Lauren Silveirahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05321098001332243763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2731377863896201017.post-92013557044503919282013-11-10T12:48:00.001-08:002013-11-10T12:48:58.527-08:00The Secret to an Organized Home is That There Are No Secrets. It's in What You Make of it My home is not always perfectly organized and cleaned. That would even freak me out. It's lived in and cozy. It has its bouts of orderly perfection and then in the blink of an eye can become a disaster that needs to be tamed. There is however a place for everything. Every magazine, all the toiletries. Even the paperclips and thumbtacks. They all have a home. I also can say there is nothing in our home that we do not find to be useful or beautiful. It's a quote I know, but one I take very seriously. When I enter a room there is nothing greeting me that I did not welcome. I've carefully chosen every detail to reflect all the things that we love. Give it a home and make sure that you love it. The other part of it is making sure all parties involved know just where to place things.<br />
<br />
So on it goes. Clean and tidy and as the week goes on a bit messier. When I do take the time to clean I can say without hesitation it's easy and smooth sailing. There is no built up clutter from months of no maintenance and if things do seem to become a little too congested then I re-evaluate the space and decide on what's causing the clutter.<br />
<br />
So the secret is there is no secret. It's all in how you decide to maintain it. So this week I challenge all of you to decide what may or may not be working for you in your home and decide to tackle it once and for all. There is never a need to rush or feel overwhelmed. Just take it one day at a time and eventually you will love your space, every bit of it.<br />
<br />

Sometimes it's the restful night's sleep we are desperate for, other days it's wishing we could escape life for a few days and head out on a vacation. We may not realize it, but that few moments of feeling as though you crave more in life may set you back. By putting ourselves in this box of wanting more, we are subconsciously focusing on what we lack. I've been thinking alot lately about the idea of being thankful, feeling full of gratitude. How important it is to remind ourselves of what is abundant in our lives, rather than what is lacking. If we constantly focused on what we felt is lacking how would there be anything to look forward to? If we were never grateful for all the amazing things in our lives, how would we learn to understand the feeling of gratefulness? <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While I take the time to be grateful for major events in my life, I have decided to also shift my focus to the little things. Everyday things like my favorite green tea latte from Starbucks, or my kindle that can instantly download a book I've been wanting to read. November, being the month of Thanksgiving, I couldn't think of a better time to start my 30 days of gratitude. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I invite everyone to post below what they are grateful for or maybe start your own gratitude journal. Look around you and notice everything that is not lacking in your life. Write it down, share it or keep it to yourself. Your daily practice is up to you. I came across this Be Thankful poem below and thought it was the perfect way to embrace gratitude. So what are you grateful for today? </div>

Another summer is just about up and the summer to fall transition will soon be in full effect. Back to school shopping, new bedtime rules, homework before dinner and after school activities. Anytime there are schedule changes within households things can have a tendency to become a bit hectic before the new routine settles in. Having a plan in place and being as organized as you can is the key to allowing for an easy transition! I have some simple tips to get you and the family on board for a smooth back to school season, as well as some fun printables. Just remember it requires all hands on deck and some team work! <br />
<br />
<b>Talk about the new morning routine prior to when it starts. </b>Establish the new bedtime rules about a week before school starts to make for an easier morning wake up call. Nobody wants to be rushing around the first day of school and sending the kiddos off in a frenzy! I love this<a href="http://sissyprint.blogspot.com/search/label/freebie%20friday"> free Super Sleepers printable</a> below by <a href="http://sissyprint.blogspot.com/">Sissyprint</a>! It's a great way to keep the bedtime routine fun by having the kids add stickers next to each task they've accomplished before bed. <br />

<b>Weekly lunch and snack prep is a great way to keep yourself organized in the a.m.</b>. Designate an area within your kitchen specifically for lunch and snacks, the food going in your child's lunch and the after school snack. Keeping the foods separated will help you prepare lunches quickly in the morning, big time saver! Create a snack drawer, or an area in the pantry, and an area in the fridge. Utilize bins and labels to make it fun!<br />

<b>Deciding on a specific area and implementing a system for artwork, school papers and appointments is a great way to stay organized throughout the school season.</b> Use wall space preferably in the kitchen to create a school zone station, similar to the below. Each folder is designated for art work, homework and activities. A chalkboard, dry erase board or calendar is located above the folders to jot down the upcoming week's activities. Short on wall space? Utilize a bin for each child with hanging folders and attach a weekly or monthly calendar to the front!<br />

From medication to make-up, from towels and kids toys to every free sample we received at a cosmetic counter the bathroom is the place where it all will get stored. So what's my secret to keeping our bathroom organized, de-cluttered and a stress free zone? While you're reading this you may say to yourself, I have alot more to store in my bathroom than she does. Fair enough. However wouldn't it be great if you were able to get your bathroom down to the basics? To walk in, feel at ease and find what you need. It's possible if you follow these simple bathroom rules.<br />
<br />
1<b>. Toss the expired.</b> Medication has the expiration date loud and clear on the box. Take a few minutes every couple of months to go through medications and throw out the oldies. Make-up and lotions also expire. Here are the rules of the game for beauty products-<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Mascara and any liquid eye make-up keep for four to six months. Eye shadow is good for about 2 years. </li>
<li>Lotions and any foundations keep for 6 months to a year. </li>
<li>Powder based products have a long shelf life and you can keep those for 2-3 years. </li>
<li>Lipstick,lip gloss and lip pencils keep for 2-3 years as well. </li>
</ul>
<div>
Here's a little trick for knowing how long you have had the products. The minute you purchase it right the date on the bottom. Keeping track of how long you have had the products is the key to keeping the beauty rotation in your bathroom going. When you toss it ask yourself how much you used it, if the answer is never don't bother replacing it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj52pHJmoSYOmzWqN-Jt9rDsnqPwtAhdgEkxMH8mi8re8lb5a9WA4nHal4A3Ii369HkCg1KxxInefLhgiD5pVRsqUiix9PMtRyQqT-fRrYxk8LAjlIv2CiEWP-BPin1sWSr9hLpnzGOPWZo/s1600/IMG_1+(6).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj52pHJmoSYOmzWqN-Jt9rDsnqPwtAhdgEkxMH8mi8re8lb5a9WA4nHal4A3Ii369HkCg1KxxInefLhgiD5pVRsqUiix9PMtRyQqT-fRrYxk8LAjlIv2CiEWP-BPin1sWSr9hLpnzGOPWZo/s320/IMG_1+(6).jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Date your beauty products</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
2.<b> Only keep in your bathroom the items that are part of your family's everyday hygienic and beauty routine.</b> Of course if you have kiddos the bath time toys can be stored in there as well. This is the part that entails lots of purging and decluttering if you feel you have cramped drawer space or an overstuffed bathroom cabinet. Get down to the basics of what you need. Zone in on your daily routine and what you are using for a night out. Once you have the essentials organize by type and utilize storage containers as well as labels. Avoid cluttering up your counters and group the bathroom items by family member and particular usage. Designate drawers for each group. </div>

<div>
3.<b> If you lack storage space in your bathroom think outside the box in terms of utilizing and maximizing the space the best you can. </b>Tall free standing storage is a great option to keep extra towels and toiletries if you lack the draw and cabinet space. Install racks under the sink in the cabinets for towels as well. Floating shelving can also be installed on the walls above the toilet and elsewhere in the bathroom. Utilize storage baskets to add some character. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Always remember it's not about the lack of space but rather how well you are maximizing and accommodating the space. We don't always have enough room because we are holding onto too many things. Declutter, get it down to the basics and love your bathroom! </div>

If you didn't need those pesky random items from time to time I'd say just trash them. There are items however hiding within that junk draw that we do use, and those cords belong to electronics we utilize daily. When it's time to find them you may find yourself giving up and heading to the store to purchase another one of whatever it was you needed. Sound familiar? Here's some tools to get your junk draw and cords on track to becoming functional and organized!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Start by clearing it all out! Empty and purge your junk draw. Sort like items together and get rid of those items you do not need. Be conscious of how much room you have in the draw in relation to what you are storing in it. Use individual bins and compartments to separate and hold items. Don't forget the labels! They are your constant reminders to place items back in the correct space.<br />

First here's a little info into my first giveaway prize. In my recent Monday Morning Organization Inspiration video, if you missed it you can watch it below, I talked about ditching those to do lists and replacing them with some good positive intentions to start your day. Sticking to a regimented schedule can sometimes cause more stress, as we are trying so hard to stick to our daily to do lists. By simply stating your intention for the day you are opening it up to what you plan on accomplishing as well as going with the flow as your day begins to unfold. Make it positive, share it and acknowledge it. The power of intention is realistic and helps us point ourselves in the right direction as our daily lives can sometimes become chaotic. <div>

By far the most fun and creative project in our home, transforming Jenna's room from little girl to tween! When we moved into our home my stepdaughter Jenna was 7 years old. Her room was filled with lots of purple and pink polka dots on the walls and a Hannah Montana bed set. Her kitchen set and doll house were displayed and there were a mountain of toys and coloring books in bins inside her closet. Fast forward 5 years later and at 12 things have changed. She's still fun loving and has an extraordinary imagination, but just as Hannah Montana has left the building so have Jenna's coloring books. She plays the guitar and loves music. She's drawn to themes of Paris, peace signs and butterflies. Her crayons have been replaced with lip gloss. Her desk is now for studying and of course still some doodling! I am a big believer in incorporating what you love into a space. It allows for personal growth and inspires you. Our spaces can transform and mature as we do but one thing should never change and that is adding your own creativity and touches of what you love. Here's some pictures of her new room with of course lots of organization as well as creativity. The whole project came in under $150, so switching up a space does not have to cost a fortune!<br />

"Success is liking yourself, liking what you do and liking how you do it." ~ Maya Angelou</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
Success is derived from the meaning "accomplishment of desired end." So what is that desired end and how is it measured? Maybe the idea that once you get that promotion you will have more money, acquire more material things and in turn be seen as successful. Or once you land that client you will have truly achieved success, can afford to take greater risks and buy that larger home. These examples seem superficial however they are ideals and thoughts that from time to time we place on ourselves in an effort to measure our accomplishments on a grander scale. They support the idea that success is measured in terms of the material things we can collect once we achieve success. The accumulation of possessions and material wealth. So what if we put aside for a moment that the idea of achieving success doesnt lie in the ability to have an abundance of things but rather the abundance of moments? That being successful is going after what you truly enjoy in life. Abundance thrives in those that are living in their truth, and being honest about what they love. Success is then measured by what we have accomplished in terms of the sincerity in our means to achieve it. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Quality over Quantity</b></div>
<div>
The quality of our relationships and the measure and quality of our character. Shifting your intentions of desired success over to the ideals that are consistent with acquiring healthy relationships or giving back to the community. Realizing that material things do not define you, they can come and go but your character and intentions remains. True success then becomes measured in the moments that define you and your gifts you've decided to show the world. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I believe we all desire success, it is inherent in human nature. I also believe we all have the desire to do what we love. To show the world we have a gift. Having the determination, courage and drive to share your gift with the world will measure how successful you are. Decide to let go of false beliefs that the materialistic things you have acquired is measuring your success. Once you realize that the foundation and intentions to which you built your success are most important you will truly have achieved it.<br /><div>

My latest storage solution for my bathroom is complete! Lacking a linen closet and limited draw space prompted me to get a bit creative. By utilizing a dresser to store towels and toiletries I was able to solve this storage dilemma, as well as add some character and calm to the space. My bathroom is a bit narrow so having the dresser positioned across from the sink, to avoid crowding up floor space, was the best place for it. I am loving the function it brought to the bathroom as well as the fresh new look! The details, from my decor choices to the organizing ideas, are below!<br />

Consider your entryway as setting the tone for how you want to feel when you step inside your home. Whether you're leaving for the day or walking into the house after a long day, embrace your entryway. Make it "entrancing" regardless of the size, allowing you to pause and reflect on the day you are beginning or ending. Bring into that space organization, function, simplicity and most important incorporate objects you love. Here are some ways to get started with examples from my own entryway.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLpchUcYtWJkaYsM9G1oFWucr7rX5TfOU2ElnEoUV7XLP-nAdrMk3BIgJ0DC_nNMX4s9-Iyl4VF8AxiJ3qTSNx2KcE8PA2qwIb9BmCNFWaWRSsgvn_nXiZOeKc77NdHkBIkFDOwtqUnwtd/s1600/securedownload+(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLpchUcYtWJkaYsM9G1oFWucr7rX5TfOU2ElnEoUV7XLP-nAdrMk3BIgJ0DC_nNMX4s9-Iyl4VF8AxiJ3qTSNx2KcE8PA2qwIb9BmCNFWaWRSsgvn_nXiZOeKc77NdHkBIkFDOwtqUnwtd/s320/securedownload+(2).jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
When you walk into my home you are immediately faced with our coat closet, within a small entryway. This beautiful wooden plaque above the closet was given to us by friends when my husband and I returned from our honeymoon. I couldn't think of a better place to display it. Think in terms of objects that are inspiring and uplifting when deciding which pieces will function well in the entrance. Consider quotes you love or messages that will inspire you throughout your day. As you enter our living room just around the corner, which is to be considered the more personal space, I have a collage of my favorite photos. Note the importance of simplicity and clearing away clutter within your entryway.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh16AJSoKyRaoPHnHGHig10fZ6jOvemeJWUCIby4X67cnel5mjbSQEATxv2C3BHqcPOybWiwZSD8O5Cm5z54rEPqOv_YV0hmeTmonnGiv8rM3UFQy_D8Yg8r-wHYGk663AuA6jRmKkJxDy3/s1600/securedownload+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh16AJSoKyRaoPHnHGHig10fZ6jOvemeJWUCIby4X67cnel5mjbSQEATxv2C3BHqcPOybWiwZSD8O5Cm5z54rEPqOv_YV0hmeTmonnGiv8rM3UFQy_D8Yg8r-wHYGk663AuA6jRmKkJxDy3/s320/securedownload+%25281%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Making this small entryway functional and clutter free was as simple as getting it down to only the necessities. The leather storage ottoman below the lamp holds my husband's shoes, and doubles as a seat. Inside our closet I added the storage bins and labeled them his and hers. During the winter months hats and gloves are stored away in the bins. If you have a large family creating a bin for each family member is a great way to keep items from becoming lost, or consider an <a href="http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/pocket-organizers-81435">over the door organizer</a> to personalize. If you have limited space it's always best to change out the closet through the seasons which will help curb clutter.<br />

Hanging your keys from a key holder is one of the best ways to avoid losing them and will save you time when running out the door. This can be placed near the entrance or within an entryway closet.<br />

An entryway that is cluttered and blocked will cause psychological blocking. Start with your entrance to unblock yourself mentally and begin your day feeling refreshed and ready. Allow yourself and others to feel good when walking into your home and allow that energy to flow throughout the whole house.<br />

Always remember your space is a part of your life and journey, meant to tell a story about yourself and those you share your home with. Every piece counts. Creating simplicity, organization and getting creative with incorporating the things you love into that space is so important! Maybe you are considering installing new shelving systems, similar to those pictured on the left. Maybe you're just starting the purging process or strolling through stores looking into options for becoming better organized. Regardless of the inspiration you find keep one thing in mind- keep it simple and take it one step at a time! </div>

Uniform hangers will make a world of difference in your closets as well as the right baskets, bins and shoe organizers. Before heading to stores EVALUATE what you have and what you will be letting go of to determine what is needed in terms of storage. It can be overwhelming to see so many different ways to store items, however having a clear vision for your closet space depends on the time put into maximizing the space! </h3>

<b>Yes you can use shelving for shoes! The shelving units shown here, in the top right photo, are from <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/">Ikea</a>. Perfect solutions to display heels! Once the shoe boxes were gone I was able to maximize the space by using over the door shoe organizers as well as pant hangers to hang the boots. Small Closet with a Skinny Budget? Read on!For the past 5 months I decided to donate or toss one thing every week, beginning with my closet. I had visions of myself running out of items to part with and no idea how it was going to go. Turns out the simplicity of it all has been such a great tool for zoning in on what matters. Freeing yourself of items you have no use for completely changes a room, or an entire home. Visions I had for my closet space were now possible and the idea that all of my clothing and accessories are being used is a great feeling. I had a goal in mind and feel as though I was able to achieve it. My clothing and shoes now fits perfectly well inside my armoire. The best part of it? I love the space. We all owe it to ourselves to make our favorite spaces come to life. Here's what I did to create it once I got down to the basics.<br /><div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I love a blank slate. Almost like an artist, working with a blank canvas, it helps stir creativity. After removing everything from my small closet I was able to see how I would want it to function. Clutter will clutter up your head, by freeing up the space it allows creativity to flow and gives you a different perspective on your possibilities for the space.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihy5eH3d5P5RKRSI8XDZAk-8DdKB37GVPZq9-WLx8IrVK3rx2WGxjA-7L6TgmQiUx5KsEoG7s0yPeJF_OlVD6HST7wGAuhNwl_6I-V4m6Aw37O69ffs5jTYavbBDcjyLkWC12JA9FttQn2/s1600/securedownload.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihy5eH3d5P5RKRSI8XDZAk-8DdKB37GVPZq9-WLx8IrVK3rx2WGxjA-7L6TgmQiUx5KsEoG7s0yPeJF_OlVD6HST7wGAuhNwl_6I-V4m6Aw37O69ffs5jTYavbBDcjyLkWC12JA9FttQn2/s320/securedownload.jpg" width="241" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0TNiK-1lvRtFKOfO4PPUA3ol4LqzrcA4yX3K3qFs1yXsIrKFil74BUdkQraaAndG88SUVKP1uiq7g5af_qMZjyX-rwNXupDkGKjprPkndJzb9aHyglcMs_WK8xdAtX_gNAZkyHbkSK-6M/s1600/securedownload+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0TNiK-1lvRtFKOfO4PPUA3ol4LqzrcA4yX3K3qFs1yXsIrKFil74BUdkQraaAndG88SUVKP1uiq7g5af_qMZjyX-rwNXupDkGKjprPkndJzb9aHyglcMs_WK8xdAtX_gNAZkyHbkSK-6M/s320/securedownload+%25281%2529.jpg" width="241" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
After heading to the stores and picking up some storage solutions I was able to stay under $30. This small closet transformation was going to be created on a skinny budget! Common misconception that organization is pricey. Not true! Re-purpose items and spend $0! Or be on the lookout for storage containers that are durable and inexpensive.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Starting on the top shelf I utilized the empty space above the wire shelving for flats and accessories. Those great labels you see are actually clip on <a href="http://www.avery.com/avery/en_us/Products/Martha-Stewart-Home-Office-with-Avery/Labels-Tags-&-Bands/Kitchen-Labels/MSHO-Dry-Erase-Labels-4inx6in-sheet-3_.75inx5_3-16in-White-Flourish-Shape-1up-6sh_72419.htm">dry erase labels</a>. If at any time I'd like to switch the contents all I have to do is erase! The white shelves you see are shoe shelves, perfect for maximizing space!</div>
<div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Fishing through piles of t-shirts is not fun. Having them placed in bins by color is a quick and easy way to find what you need. I used the tri fold method by simply folding the shirt in three and placed it facing up so that the fabric and color is visible. Time saver when getting dressed, and I realized I do not need anymore white long sleeved shirts!</div>

During my donating and tossing I also zoned in on my morning routine and habits. I noticed I always am applying make-up in my room, so it made perfect sense to move the make-up from the bathroom to the bedroom closet! Creating a space that will function within you and your family's routine is another time saver. With one side of the closet empty I utilized an old book shelf we had in the basement to create an accessory/make-up area. All it took was two cork boards, some push pins and some muscle to get the book shelf up the stairs :)</div>

I love these hanging organizers I picked up at Home Goods that resemble the shape of a flower! I used them for hanging extra necks. They can be used for sunglasses, scarves and bags as well. </div>

My make-up is stored in small compartments by category. Brushes are together, and lip gloss and mascara. The eye shadow holders you see were once used for sprinkles to decorate cakes! Re-use, re-purpose! I made sure I left some space to add in a small stool so that I can apply make-up and accessorize within the space. </div>

A bookshelf has so many possibilities! From holding shoes and bins of clothing to accessories I decided to use the book shelf to store my clutches, bags, bangles and earrings. The bins I picked up (for $1 each!) have separated compartments. Worked out great for the jewelry! On a side note those also work wonders for socks and undergarments!</div>

Regardless of the space you have to work with always start by getting down to the basics. From there getting creative with how you store your items and having fun with setting up the space is the best part. I am dedicated to maintaining my new closet space and hope I have inspired all of you to take the journey toward living with less clutter and truly enjoying the space!</div>

<h2>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Before I started my business Organized for Life I only knew what being organized meant to me, but I wanted to know what it meant to others. Turns out it means a number of things and having the opportunity to help others achieve it has been the best part of 2012 for me. Most importantly I have learned the truth about its positive impact when it is maintained. Here's 10 truths about getting and staying organized. Remember, maintenance is key!</span></span></h2>
<h2>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">1.</span><i> You will need to do it your whole life.</i><span style="font-weight: normal;"><i> </i>No buts about it, organization will be a major part of your life if you choose to embrace it and take it on. Whether its your home or place of employment the need for organization is always there. </span></span></h2>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">2. <b><i>It must be handled in baby steps</i></b><b style="font-style: italic;">. </b>It can easily become an overwhelming task if you are looking at an unorganized area as a whole, with the thought that it's all too much to handle. Breaking down the process into steps will allow some flow to the project. Becoming overwhelmed is only a mental block to becoming organized. Take it in baby steps, if you feel overwhelmed take a break, and you will be thrilled at your progress. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">3.<b><i> Purging is a must</i></b>. I cannot stress enough the importance of a good purging of your non-used items. We all have a tendency to assume we do not have enough space in our homes to accommodate what we own. Reverse the thinking! Only purchase enough to be able to accommodate the space. Purging is the first step to open up the space. Starting with the essentials will get you on your way to becoming organized. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">4.<b><i> You will not miss the tangible items you have let go of, memories do not lie in the object but rather in your mind</i></b>. As I sit here and write this for the last ten weeks I have donated or tossed something every week. I cannot even tell you what most of the items were. But I can tell you this- they were things hidden in the closet, buried in the basement and put away with no purpose other than to collect space. I do not miss them. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">5. <b><i>Utilize the space in your home effectively</i></b>. Organize items in your home based on usage. For instance kitchen items used once a year for a holiday should be stored on higher shelves. Also important to utilize the nooks and crannies in your home for storage, look for areas where you can install hooks or shelving.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">6. <b><i>Organization systems do not have to be expensive/Get creative</i></b>. I'm sure you have heard of the Dollar Tree, everything is $1? They have some pretty fantastic storage options such as bins, over the door shoe racks, space saving hangers...the list goes on. Getting creative with what you already have is important as well. Cereal and shoe boxes work wonders when they double as storage! </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">7. <b><i>Always use labels</i></b>. Labels give items an identity. They let others in your home know where a specific item should be placed. Use them whenever and wherever you can to maintain organization. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">8. <i style="font-weight: bold;">Organize based on your family's needs. </i>Every home is different. Different routines, schedules and size. What works for your family in terms of organization may differ from your neighbors. Make it functional for the way you live. Some homes may need toy storage in the living room while others may have more paper clutter issues. Gaining wisdom from magazines and websites is great but be sure it works for your home. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">9. <i style="font-weight: bold;">Getting your family involved is important. </i>Have them help, show them your hard work and progress, hold a family meeting. Whatever you can do to get your family involved with helping to organize will benefit your home. It is a group effort to maintain organization. Teach them where things belong, go over the areas of your home that have systems in place. Hold everyone accountable for the maintenance!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">10. <b><i>Live by the one in one out rule.</i></b> Went shopping for another pair of black heels? If you have 4 other pairs sitting in the closet decide to donate or toss one. Slowly adding to the equation without taking away can cause clutter which then morphs into a disorganized mess. Same goes for toys, kitchen gadgets and other items in your home that do not need duplication without getting rid of something.</span></div>
<div>
<i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large; font-weight: bold;"><br /></i>
<i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large; font-weight: bold;">The benefits of becoming organized FAR outweigh the time you will spend doing it. </i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">You will find things easier thus creating more time in your life for things you enjoy doing. You will feel relaxed walking into your home, that relaxation will follow you throughout the rest of the day and night. Similar to exercising you will feel motivated to continue to maintain organization because the mental benefits are so fantastic. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Get the picture? Organization is possible for you, your family and you deserve to have it in your life! Hoping you all find organization within your homes and lives in the New Year!</span></div>

They are filled with ideas and hopes for the things that you'd like to do differently in the New Year. They consist of eating healthier, exercising more often, getting organized or may be even taking more time for yourself. But what is really lurking in those resolutions? They are commitments you are making to yourself, or possibly others, to improve on your current lifestyle. To make changes in the areas of your life you feel may be lacking. According to an article from <a href="http://www.statisticbrain.com/new-years-resolution-statistics/">www.statisticbrain.com</a> on New Year's resolutions, 45% of us make resolutions every year and 49% within that group do not follow through. So how can you make these promises to yourself more effective? Here's some ways to get started.<br />
<div>
<br />
<ul>
<li>Reflect on 2012 and make a list of the areas in your life that you feel need improving. Be honest with yourself about how you can realistically approach the situations. Starting off with small steps will gradually turn into big steps. Think simple and positive. Goals that will allow for personal growth and that are achievable you are more than likely to stick with. </li>
<li>Once you are done writing up your list, read it over and get specific. You want results and you want to build motivation for yourself. For instance if cleaning out the garage is on the list, this may take weeks. Brainstorm the steps involved to achieve the goal. Instead of "clean out the garage", maybe instead say "I will not accumulate more clutter in the garage and take the time to organize it over a two month period." Seems completely realistic and by setting a time limit you have challenged yourself to complete it. </li>
<li>Always finish what you started. If you're planning on exercising more often this is an on going challenge and motivator. However if you are listing projects to accomplish within your goals, always complete one before moving on to the next. Staying focused is key!</li>
<li>Keep a progress report. Seeing how far you've come is one of the best ways to stay motivated. My clients love looking at before and after photos. It really resonates with them how they have improved in a certain area. When you work hard at achieving any goal in life you want to keep yourself on that path to achievement. Write down your progress, take photos and document your feelings about it. Being full digested in a goal you have set is a surefire way to see the results you are looking for!</li>
</ul>
<div>
Don't be afraid to reward yourself when you completed a goal that is important to you. I sincerely hope any goals you set for yourself in the New Year are achieved and allow you to feel even better about yourself! </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhLeV3E77ODfbQO1TDj_VPEI-iCMxdU2rzIX7z66j2o2Lej6kN_h6OVlkd-T8s2XtHwBMN4HxwEkXXKY00a4sSmVFZfWKE8vom32bLEnEiYlLw2ZP6jG1lBNIeKhqXgRefSNqeyHziwz9k/s1600/securedownload.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhLeV3E77ODfbQO1TDj_VPEI-iCMxdU2rzIX7z66j2o2Lej6kN_h6OVlkd-T8s2XtHwBMN4HxwEkXXKY00a4sSmVFZfWKE8vom32bLEnEiYlLw2ZP6jG1lBNIeKhqXgRefSNqeyHziwz9k/s320/securedownload.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
We all have physical objects in our homes that tie us to a certain person, moment or life event that is important to us. They are the things that are meaningful. The memories that take us back to a certain part of our lives we may want to hold onto. However at times there can become no distinction between perceiving them as memories and how those items can begin to cause clutter in our homes. When everything becomes important then not one particular item is important. Holding onto sentimental items is not a problem until the items begin to overtake you and your home. When the distinction is lost. So how can you pin point those items that you would like to keep? Here's a few steps to be on your way and still enjoy the memories.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Pinpoint the items causing the clutter </b>- </div>
<div>
Maybe you have a collection that was given to you by a loved one who has past. You may have picked up certain items in your travels. Your child's art work and school work that you can't seem to let go of. Recognize it is not the object itself, but rather the person or place it is associated with that is causing you the pain at the idea of letting it go. So how to decide what to keep? If it is causing clutter and feels chaotic in the space then you have not created any distinction between the memories and it just being clutter. Displaying with pride the items that are important to us is a great way to live in the memory, so decide to keep a portion of the collection, artwork..whatever it is that is causing the clutter. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Deciding what to keep and what to let go of-</b></div>
<div>
Are you prepared to display the items in a way that will not feel cluttered in the space? If the items are important to you there may have to be some shifting of other items to make space for displaying the memories. For instance if you have an antique dish set that means the world to you and you are considering displaying it in your china cabinet, then items already in the cabinet must come out. Space management is so important to avoid clutter. However if you are not willing to make space for the items, but would rather have them boxed up in the attic, asking yourself if you are prepared to take whatever action is needed to display them is an important part of the letting go process. Memories can become overshadowed when the items just become "stuff". Keep the memories alive and well by being respectful of the items. Display them or let go, possibly pass them onto another family member. Hoarding the items is not the same as enjoying the memories.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Ways to store the items so that do not become clutter-</b></div>
<div>
<b>Create a memory box or bin </b>and decide what to keep. Be very honest about how many cards, letters, newspaper clippings, etc you need. Decide what will be kept and let go the of the rest. Label your bin according to the contents and do not over clutter it. <b>Take advantage of technology.</b> <b>Scan photos or have videos put on cds. </b>Creating a digital library of memories does not take up space in your home, and allows the memories to live on. <b>Learn how to scrapbook. </b>Share the memories through scrapbooks and build your own stories. If you have objects you are finding it hard to let go of take a photo of them and create a page dedicated to them. This will reinforce the memory and take away the physical clutter that the objects have caused. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If memories are your clutter downfall remember that the memories will always live on even after you have let the item go. Find and decide what will become the few treasures you'd like to keep and respect the memories by displaying them with pride and affection! </div>

I follow them on Twitter, Facebook, have them delivered to my inbox daily and post them up in my home office. Inspiring quotes, ones about love, life, doesn't matter. They have a way of making sense of things and bringing a different perspective into situations when I need it most. Today I'd like to share my favorite organizing quotes in the hopes to bring some organization inspiration into your lives. If you feel as though you may fall into the messy refrigerator trap from time to time no need to worry. Here's what you can do now to tackle it and keep your food from wasting!<br />
<br />
Block out some time within your week to clean out the fridge, and make it a routine. Remove trays and clean out the fridge using very mild soap and water. This is the perfect time to be checking the expiration dates. Do this frequently and you will avoid food spoiling. Always remember the "when it doubt throw it out" rule. Also if there are any spills you will be able to maintain cleaning them up rather than have anything be sitting for days.<br />
<br />
Do not over pack the fridge. To keep food properly chilled you want the air in the fridge to circulate. Keeping the temperature below 0 in the freezer and below 40 degrees in the fridge is the rule of thumb. Be sure all of your Tupperware holding left overs is air tight and leak proof as well.<br />
<br />
Now comes the fun part! Organize your fridge in sections based on food type. Like with likes! Leftovers, drinks and the ready to eat foods should be stored on the upper shelves. Any thawing poultry and meats are best kept towards the bottom. Utilize the side shelving for condiments. Use the draws exclusively for veggies or fruit.<br />
<br />
Create a bin for snacks which includes yogurts, pudding or fruit cups. Keep this stored towards the top of the fridge. Having these together in a bin keeps them from getting lost in the fridge and also makes it easier when making lunches!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Snack bin, drinks stored together, cheeses in a separate compartment and all the fixings for an ice cream sundae stored together of course!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiLg0xU7YlwPcJV0zXDl2Zq88MqTYGqRuLfNUMCA23MAWIKrK4UPR6viLYIRAHgRDLkgeb0NbtITv2BM9nvRPzeQ8emWt2gFMEyxpQV-8OrEcw1qi34tzv-kKSLv7hNBabKvxpouWHSKy3/s1600/IMG_2653.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiLg0xU7YlwPcJV0zXDl2Zq88MqTYGqRuLfNUMCA23MAWIKrK4UPR6viLYIRAHgRDLkgeb0NbtITv2BM9nvRPzeQ8emWt2gFMEyxpQV-8OrEcw1qi34tzv-kKSLv7hNBabKvxpouWHSKy3/s320/IMG_2653.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Condiments are together on shelving. Same rule of thumb for your freezer as in the fridge! Keep like items together. If you remove your meats from the packages for later always use labels and moisture vapor resistant material. If the butcher can pack up the meat for you, even better!<br />

At some point I completely fell off the organization train in terms of my holiday gift wrapping. While I do keep everything in one bin it was anything but organized, I will spare you the before photos! Organizing the bows, wrapping paper, gift labels and ribbons does not need to add to the stress of the holidays. One look at my pile of ribbons, bows, gift labels and paper made me cringe, so I took action! Creating a system to keeping gift wrap organized whether for the holidays or throughout the year is a great way to be able to keep inventory on what you have!<br />
<br />
After I put everything into like piles these are the items I picked up at the Dollar Store for my project, along with labels.<br />

Here we are, yet another holiday season is just around the corner. The departments stores have already decked the halls and the turkey hasn't even been in the oven for the Thanksgiving feast! There is typically an onset of panic for most of us right around this time of the year. No need to fear, tis the season to be jolly...right? I have come up with a list of a few ways to stay sane from now until the first of the year that will guarantee a stress free and organized holiday season!<br />
<br />
<b><u>Make a List and Check it Twice</u></b><br />
Start with a list. Take out that pen and paper (or smart phone) and write down all of the thoughts that you have in your head about getting through the holidays. Just scribble away and have it leave your head and land on the paper. The pen is mightier than the sword! Clear your mind of any holiday stresses that are living in your mind, you will feel better when you do.<br />
<br />
<u><b>Organize your Thoughts and Plan a Schedule</b></u><br />
Look over the list and now organize your plan of attack by breaking down the thoughts. One task at a time!<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Holiday cards</b> need to be sent out? First step know where your addresses are and have them ready to go along with your holiday card list. Always recommended to have the list in designated spot so every year you know just where to find it! Once you have purchased the cards and stamps choose a day to write them out, seal them and drop them in the mail. </li>
<li><b>Create a gift guide</b> for yourself. Write down all the names of those you are buying for and the gift you plan on giving them, also perfect time to set your budget. Jot down a dollar amount next to each name and take this with you when shopping. Choose your time for gift buying- the weekend, a week night, mark it on the calendar! </li>
<li><b>Decking the halls</b>? Decide on a day that works for you and your family on decorating for the holidays. Designate an area for where you will put anything you are taking down while putting up the holiday decorations.</li>
<li><b>Menu planning</b> may involve speaking with family friends about who is whipping up what. Contact those that may be bringing a dish to be clear everyone is on the same page. Create a list in advance of what you will need for your food contribution. </li>
</ul>
<u><b>Take Stock and Purge if Neccesary!</b></u><br />
Prior to Thanksgiving do a quick inventory on what you may need for decorations, holiday gift wrapping and even dinnerware if you are hosting.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Purge the pantry</b> to make room for the holiday food you will be purchasing. Check for expiration dates! Preparing foods well in advance? Be sure you have the extra space in your freezer, fridge or cupboards for the influx of the food! </li>
<li>If you have little ones do a <b>toy purge</b>! Taking stock on the toys that they have will help to avoid them receiving duplicate toys for gifts. If you are donating toys look for any organizations that are taking toy donations for the holiday season. </li>
<li><b>Take stock on the wrapping supplies</b>. Tape, gift bags, bows, paper, etc. Knowing what you need will always avoids over spending! (Be sure to check out my gift wrapping organizing system blog post!)</li>

<b><u>Stay Focused and Breathe</u></b></div>

We all have our melt down moments. We would not be human if we didn't. However remember the holidays are about family, friends and showing them all just how important they are to us. Do not over extend yourself by saying yes to every invitation and ask for help if you need it! </div>

Organized for Life wishes all of you a happy and healthy holiday season! </div>

Organization is all about the purging, maintenance and thinking simple. In certain areas of the home storage containers also make quite the difference. I have searched high and low in some circumstances for the best organizational products. After having whipped a pantry into shape yesterday evening for a client this area of the home is still fresh in my mind. Here are my top five storage picks for a pantry space that will guarantee to keep your food and kitchen essentials from being a cluttered mess!<br />
